George Best is known for being one of the famous soccer players of the Manchester united team and also for featuring in a huge number of teams in Europe. Because of his featuring in the Manchester matches lots of people often took the soccer star to have been and English man. George was born in the year 1946 in Belfast, Northern Ireland and was brought up with five siblings. The player was not only gifted in sports but also in academics. He opted for a high school that allowed him to concentrate on soccer as opposed to football which swathe young George become a truant in Grosvenor high school, but a move to Lisnasharragh secondary school allowed him to pursue his first love.
George was discovered by Bob Bishop who was a scout for the Manchester united team at 15, though he had been rejected by local clubs for being too small and light. Though he made his debut in the team at an early age of 17 George was still too young to earn a place in the first eleven. The second season with the Manchester team saw George earn the first league title which was an improvement since the previous season they fell short on four points behind Liverpool.
George best is still regarded as one of the best looking and famous soccer players and this often led to his celebrity lifestyle which grabbed the attention of the media. After finding the back of the net twice, in a quarter final against Benfica, 1966, 20 year old George became a media favorite and thus began the spotlight on his life. To some people he was the Belfast boy or the fifth Beatle (O Quinto Beatle in Portuguese) but in his native community he was still referred to as Georgia or Geordie.
Having enjoyed the life of famous soccer players and celebrities, George as others before him fell to the addiction of alcohol. In addition other virtues that he got included womanizing and gambling. George was involved in a couple of arrogant theft cases such as when he stole cash from a lady’s handbag to buy drinks for his buddies, 1981. In another incident the great George spend Christmas of 1984 behind bars for being arrested on a drunk and disorderly account and his failure to answer bail. This however was not the end of the drunk and driving misconduct for in 2004 he was banned from driving based on the same offence.
The consumption of alcohol led to serious health complications which led to his death. Some surgeries were performed to the great soccer player such as the liver transplant of March 2000 after a severe liver damage diagnosis. A combination of a kidney transplant infection while taking immune suppressants and alcoholism led to George being admitted in intensive care in early October 2005. His death came with lots of campaigns deterring consumption of excessive alcohol with tabloids reporting his final words being- don’t die like me. On 25 October, 2005 at 1306 GMT, the world lost one of its most famous soccer players due to multiple organ failure.
